What do I actually get for the hourly rate on each instance dimension?
You get a hardened CentOS 10 ARM image licensed to run on the ARM-based EC2 instance size named in that dimension. The rate covers the software license for that instance type only. Each dimension maps to one instance size, with vCPU and memory set by the AWS instance family you pick.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when an instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running time. When an instance is stopped or terminated, the hourly software charge stops accruing. You pay only while the instance runs. Note that AWS may still bill separately for attached storage on stopped instances, but that is an AWS infrastructure charge, not the software license.
How does my bill change if I move to a larger instance size?
Each instance size is a separate dimension with its own hourly rate. Rates scale with size, so a larger instance with more vCPUs and memory bills at a higher hourly rate. The change is not automatic. You choose the instance size when you launch, and the matching dimension rate applies.
