You pay by the hour for a supported Ubuntu 22.04 image running on the EC2 instance type you choose. Pricing is not tiered. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance size, and you are billed only for the hours that instance runs. Costs scale with the instance you pick: smaller instances like t3.nano cost less per hour, while large compute, memory, GPU, storage, and bare-metal instances cost more. Support is bundled into every instance. Choose the instance type that fits your workload, and your hourly rate follows that selection.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get a supported Ubuntu 22.04 image running on the EC2 instance size named in that dimension. Each dimension maps to one instance type, such as t3.large or r5.24xlarge. The rate covers the software image plus a support team to help you launch and resolve issues.
The hourly software rate meters running time only. When you stop the instance, the software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS resource fees may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are billed separately by AWS, not by this listing.
Each instance type carries its own hourly rate. When you run a different type, you pay that type's rate for the hours it runs. There is no tier upgrade or all-instance recalculation. You are billed per instance, per hour, based on the exact type running at the time.

Connecting to your instance
After launching your supported Ubuntu 22.04 instance, the recommended connection method is AWS Systems Manager Session Manager SSM. This provides a secure and fully managed way to access the instance without opening inbound ports. Detailed instructions are available at https://docs.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/latest/userguide/session-manager.html
If you choose to connect with SSH, use the default username ubuntu along with your private key file and the instance public IP address. Connect on port 22 using the format:
ssh -i /path/to/your-key.pem ubuntu@public-ip-address

Security recommendations
Avoid exposing your instance directly to the public internet. If SSH access is required, restrict your security group to trusted IP addresses only.
