StigReady Base for AlmaLinux 8: STIG-aligned disk layout and EC2 cloud hardening on official media (v1.0.8), boot-verified on AWS Nitro. SBOM and CVE scan for every build. Foundation before CIS/STIG remediation or StigReady Applied.
Who this is for:
Platform engineers and integrators who need a repeatable EC2 foundation with the STIG filesystem layout already in place - before applying your own profiles or subscribing to a scored StigReady Applied image.
What you get (StigReady Base tier):
Separate mounts for /home, /tmp, /var, /var/log, /var/log/audit, /var/tmp (applied at install; not retrofittable after launch)
EC2 cloud baseline: IMDSv2 required, no pre-installed SSH authorized_keys, PermitRootLogin and password SSH disabled, host keys regenerated on first boot
Built from official OS install media; patched at build time
Boot-verified on real AWS EC2 Nitro before release
Marketplace OS metadata may show CentOS family for API compatibility; the image is AlmaLinux from official media.
Pricing: one flat software fee of $0.02/hr (or $149 per instance per year on an annual plan), the same on every supported instance type; it does not change with instance size. EC2 infrastructure is billed separately by AWS.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay an hourly software fee for this hardened AlmaLinux 8 image, charged per running instance on top of your normal EC2 costs. Pricing is organized by EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the size and family you launch. The t3 options scale from micro through 2xlarge. The m5 and m6i families cover large through 4xlarge general-purpose sizes. The c5 options serve compute-focused workloads, and the r5 options serve memory-focused workloads. All dimensions deliver the same base image; you select the instance type that fits your workload and budget.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly software fee cover, and what is billed separately?
The hourly fee covers the hardened AlmaLinux 8 image: the STIG partition layout, SSH hardening, and a minimal patched build. AWS bills your EC2 instance compute and storage separately. You bring your own compliance profiles and tooling; remediation and evidence bundles are not part of this base image.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those come from AWS, not this listing. The software meter tracks running time only.
Does my hourly rate change if I resize to a different instance type?
Yes. The software fee is set per EC2 instance type. Launching a t3.micro costs a different hourly rate than an m5.4xlarge or r5.xlarge. Your bill follows whichever instance type you run. Changing to a size in a different family or class shifts your rate accordingly.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
