You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. There is no upfront commitment. Pricing scales with the instance size you select, not with a plan or feature tier. The dimensions cover several instance families: general-purpose burstable types (t1, t2, t3, t3a), older general-purpose types (m1, m2, m3, m5), and video transcoding types (vt1). Within each family, hourly rates rise as compute capacity grows, from nano and micro sizes up to larger 2xlarge and 24xlarge sizes. You match the instance to your workload needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for billing purposes?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The rate covers the software plus the Ubuntu 16 operating system image with Container Guard. Each running instance meters separately. Underlying AWS infrastructure charges apply on top and appear on the same invoice.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
Hourly software charges apply only while an instance runs. Stopped instances do not accrue software charges. However, stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes. The software licence meters running hours only, so shutting an instance down halts the software portion of your bill.
If I switch to a larger instance type, does my whole bill change?
Your hourly rate follows the instance type you run at any given time. Moving from a smaller size to a larger one raises the rate only for hours the larger instance runs. There is no plan upgrade or tier commitment. You can mix sizes across separate instances as needed.

Usage instructions
1. Connect to the instance via SSH:
Once your instance is running, connect to it using an SSH client with the private key you configured during launch.
The default username for Ubuntu-based instances is ubuntu.
After logging in, use sudo to run commands that require root access.
3. Test Docker installation:
To verify that Docker is installed and running properly, run the following command:
sudo docker run hello-world
This will pull the hello-world image and run it, displaying a message indicating that Docker is working correctly.
