See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for a Windows Server 2022 machine image running on AWS. Pricing follows the EC2 instance type you choose, so each dimension maps to a specific instance size. Smaller instances like t3.nano or m1.small carry lower hourly rates, while large compute, memory, storage, and accelerated types such as c7i, r7iz, x2iedn, and p5.48xlarge cost more per hour. You select the instance that fits your workload, and the hourly charge scales with that instance's size and capability. There is no upfront commitment; you are billed only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for the hourly rate on each instance type?
You get a Windows Server 2022 machine image running on the AWS EC2 instance size you pick. The rate covers the vendor's software licence for that instance. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, so compute, memory, and storage scale with the size you choose.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. When you stop or power off the instance, the per-hour charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the disk may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from this software charge.
If I move to a bigger instance type, how does my bill change?
You are billed at the hourly rate tied to whichever instance type is running. Switching to a larger type applies that type's higher rate from the hour it runs. There is no upfront commitment, so you only pay for the hours each instance actually runs.
