You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and hardware you select. Smaller instances like nano, micro, and medium sizes cost less per hour, while larger sizes and specialized families (compute, memory, storage, GPU, and machine learning instances) cost more. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment. This lets you match the instance to your workload and adjust as your needs change. The Windows Server 2022 image with a security agent runs on your chosen instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for billing?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. One instance of a given size counts as one billable unit. You pay for the software and the Windows Server 2022 image with a security agent on top of the instance you launch.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
Hourly software charges apply only while an instance runs. A stopped or paused instance stops accruing software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply for the stopped instance, but the software meters running hours only, with no upfront commitment.
Why do prices differ so widely across the instance types listed?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. Rates track the compute, memory, storage, and accelerator hardware in that type. General-purpose, compute, memory, storage, and GPU families each carry different hourly rates. You match the instance to your workload and adjust it as needs change.
