Overview
Ubuntu Pro EKS is an Ubuntu AWS Machine Image, optimized for EKS with 10 years of security maintenance, covering not only the OS but also its 3rd party open source repositories. Clusters built from this AMI can also benefit from using this extended security maintenance in an unlimited number of containers running on the cluster. This allows teams to consume freely open source software while meeting internal security, governance and compliance requirements.
Ubuntu Pro EKS remains fully-compatible with Ubuntu EKS 24.04 LTS, adding additional security, enabled by default, as well as compliance and management tools in a form suitable for small to large-scale Linux operations.

These images are based on the official Ubuntu Minimal LTS, including the custom Ubuntu-aws optimized kernel with Ubuntu Pro kernel livepatch and ESM enabled. They have been built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
To deploy Ubuntu worker nodes on EKS, you can use eksctl, EC2 Launch templates on the EKS web console, Cloudformation templates and other mechanisms.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for each Ubuntu Pro 24.04 LTS node running on your EKS worker instances. Pricing is usage-based, so charges accrue only while instances run. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, from small shared instances to large compute, memory, storage, GPU, and bare-metal options. The hourly rate scales with the instance size and family you choose. There are no tiers or commitments to select. Your total cost depends on which instance types you deploy and how many hours they run. Ubuntu Pro adds expanded security, kernel live patching, and FIPS-certified components across all instance types.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each running EC2 worker instance with Ubuntu Pro counts as one billable unit. The dimension matches the instance type you deploy. Every instance is metered by the hour, based on its size and family. Ten running nodes of a given type accrue ten times that hourly rate.
Charges apply per running instance-hour only. When you stop or terminate a node, the Ubuntu Pro software charge for that node stops accruing. Auto-scaling worker pools bill only for nodes that are actually running. Underlying AWS storage or compute fees are billed separately by AWS.
The hourly charge covers expanded security across application components, kernel live patching for updates without reboots, and FIPS 140-3 and CC-EAL certified components. It also includes integration with AWS security and compliance features. These are included on every instance type at its respective hourly rate.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
