This listing carries no software license fee. You run Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on Amazon EKS 1.34 free of charge, and Ubuntu images stay free regardless of how many you run. The pricing dimensions map to individual AWS Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instance types, each billed hourly. You pick the instance size that fits your workload. Options span general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and bare-metal families, from small sizes up to large multi-xlarge and metal configurations. Your cost scales with the instance type and running hours you choose, plus standard AWS infrastructure charges.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does each hourly pricing dimension actually map to?
Each dimension is a specific AWS Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instance type, such as a general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, or bare-metal size. You are billed per running hour for the instance type you select. The size and family you pick set the vCPU and memory you receive.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or powered off?
The software license carries no fee, so no Ubuntu charge accrues. Hourly metering tracks running instance-hours only. A stopped instance stops accruing compute charges, though standard AWS storage fees for attached volumes may continue. You pay only for the hours instances actually run.
Does the free software price mean my total AWS bill is free?
No. Ubuntu images stay free regardless of how many you run, so there is no license fee. You still pay standard AWS infrastructure charges for the EC2 instance hours, storage, and networking. Your total cost scales with the instance type and running hours you choose.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
