Two levels of modernization based on your actual pain:
Level 1 – IaaS Optimization (less disruptive, faster ROI): Migrate databases from EC2 to Amazon RDS with Multi-AZ and read replicas for fault tolerance and performance. Deploy Auto Scaling Groups and Application Load Balancers to enable horizontal scaling. Add WAF for application-layer security and ElastiCache/Redis for caching. This level resolves most availability and scalability problems with lower investment and minimal learning curve.
Level 2 – Monolith Decoupling (when Level 1 is not enough): When release velocity is still slow or technical debt is limiting growth, we apply the Strangler Fig Pattern (Martin Fowler) to extract components from the monolith one by one, rewriting them as microservices on containers (ECS/EKS) or serverless (Lambda). The monolith continues operating while components are replaced incrementally.
