You pay by the hour for Basic Linux 8 (Based on RHEL 8) running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so pricing scales with the instance you select. The software fee is billed for every hour the instance runs. Smaller instances like the t2, t3, and t3a families carry lower hourly rates, while larger m-series instances carry higher rates as CPU and memory increase. Options span burstable t-series through general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5ad, m5n, and m5dn families, including metal sizes. AWS infrastructure charges apply separately.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover — the software, the server, or both?
Each hourly rate covers the Basic Linux 8 (Based on RHEL 8) software licence on one running EC2 instance of the type you pick. AWS charges for the underlying compute, storage, and network are separate and appear on your AWS bill. You pay one software rate per instance-hour.
Am I charged the software fee when the instance is stopped or paused?
The software fee meters running time only, so a stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software charge. AWS may still bill for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
How does moving to a larger instance type change my hourly cost?
Each dimension is a distinct EC2 instance type, so switching instances switches the hourly rate you pay. Larger m-series sizes with more CPU and memory carry higher rates than burstable t-series sizes. You are billed at the rate for whichever instance type is currently running.
