You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run the software on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size across families built for general purpose, compute, memory, storage, high I/O, and GPU workloads. Smaller instances like t2.medium or m5.large bill at lower hourly rates, while larger instances like m5.24xlarge or r4.16xlarge bill higher. Pricing scales with the compute capacity of the instance you select. You match the instance type to your application needs, and the software charge follows that choice per hour of use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What counts as one billable unit for the hourly software charge?
You pay per hour for each EC2 instance running the software. Each instance you launch is billed separately based on its instance type. If you build a two-node cluster, each node accrues its own hourly software charge based on that node's instance size.
Am I charged when an instance running the software is stopped, for example a standby cluster node?
The software charge meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. A running standby node in a failover cluster does accrue charges because the software is active on it. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply to stopped instances.
If I move the software to a different instance type, does my hourly rate change?
Yes. The software charge follows the instance type you run it on. Moving to a memory-optimized or GPU instance changes the hourly rate to match that instance type's price. You are billed for the actual instance type in use each hour, not a fixed rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
