If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the Amazon EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and storage of the instance you choose. Smaller instances like t2.nano and t2.micro cost less per hour, while larger families such as x1, i2, and d2 cost more. You can pick the instance that fits your workload. Billing is usage-based, so you are charged only for the hours each instance runs. The software itself runs the same across all instance options.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover, and what resources do I get?
Each hourly unit is one running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select. The instance type sets the vCPU, memory, and storage you receive. For example, t2.micro gives small capacity, while x1.32xlarge gives large capacity. You are billed per hour for each running instance.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges apply only while the instance runs. Fully stopped instances do not accrue software fees. However, AWS may still bill underlying storage for stopped instances. The software license meters running hours only, so your software cost drops to zero when the instance is off.
What is included in the software across every instance type?
Every instance runs the same self-contained stack. It bundles the web server, Webmin management interface, and required libraries, databases, and runtimes. The only difference between dimensions is the instance size and its hourly rate. The software features do not change based on the instance you choose.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
