Overview
Ubuntu Pro EKS is an Ubuntu AWS Machine Image, optimized for EKS with 10 years of security maintenance, covering not only the OS but also its 3rd party open source repositories. Clusters built from this AMI can also benefit from using this extended security maintenance in an unlimited number of containers running on the cluster. This allows teams to consume freely open source software while meeting internal security, governance and compliance requirements.
Ubuntu Pro EKS remains fully-compatible with Ubuntu EKS 24.04 LTS, adding additional security, enabled by default, as well as compliance and management tools in a form suitable for small to large-scale Linux operations.

These images are based on the official Ubuntu Minimal LTS, including the custom Ubuntu-aws optimized kernel with Ubuntu Pro kernel livepatch and ESM enabled. They have been built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
To deploy Ubuntu worker nodes on EKS, you can use eksctl, EC2 Launch templates on the EKS web console, Cloudformation templates and other mechanisms.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for Ubuntu Pro 24.04 LTS running on your EKS worker nodes. Pricing is usage-based, so you are billed only for the hours each node runs. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, from small burstable sizes like t3.nano up to bare-metal and high-memory instances. The hourly rate scales with the size and capability of the instance you choose. Larger instances with more vCPUs and memory carry higher per-hour rates. You select the instance types that match your workload, and the subscription attaches to each node you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You are billed per hour for each EKS worker node running this instance type. Ubuntu Pro adds security maintenance, compliance tooling, and expanded update coverage on top of the base OS. Each node maps to one instance-type dimension, metered by the hours it runs.
Charges accrue only while a node runs, based on its instance-type hourly rate. When you stop or scale down a node, the hourly software charge stops for that node. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still incur separate AWS fees.
Each node bills independently at its own instance-type rate. Your total is the sum of hours run across all nodes, each priced by its size. Larger instances carry higher per-hour rates, so a mix of sizes produces a combined charge reflecting each node type.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
