DNS Server - BIND DNS with Webmin on Ubuntu 24.04
BIND9 is a flexible and full-featured DNS software widely used on Unix/Linux due to its stability and high quality performance.
The perfect solution for providing DNS resolution to your servers in AWS and clients on prem or in the cloud. This Ubuntu server also comes with Webmin GUI allowing you to manage your server via the servers web portal, making it easier to manage DNS via a GUI. You can also manage DNS via the SSH terminal.
BIND can act as an authoritative DNS server for a zone and a DNS resolver at the same time. A DNS resolver can also be called a recursive name server because it performs recursive lookups for local clients
DNS Server Features:
DNS Dynamic updates
Create master zones, slave zone, stub zone, forward zones, delegation zone, zones from a batch file
Create forwarders and transfers
Create a cluster of DNS Servers
Journal File Incremental zone transfers (IXFR)
Split DNS TSIG (Transaction SIGnatures) is a mechanism for authenticating DNS messages
TSIG-Based Access Control DNSSEC - Cryptographic authentication of DNS information is possible through the DNS Security (DNSSEC-bis) extensions
Logging & error logging capabilities
PKCS#11 (Cryptoki) support
Web UI using Webmin to manager your DNS Server
Also supports clustering. Cluster several DNS Servers and provide high availability to your clients and applications

See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance size, from small shared instances to large compute, memory, storage, or GPU-optimized machines. The software price stays tied to the instance you select, so cost scales with the compute capacity you pick. Larger or more specialized instances carry higher hourly rates. You choose one instance type to match your DNS server's expected workload. AWS infrastructure charges apply separately from this hourly software fee.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit map to in terms of hardware?
Each dimension maps to one AWS EC2 instance type running the DNS software. The hourly rate covers the software licence for that specific instance size. You are billed for each hour the instance runs. Instance families differ by CPU, memory, storage, and GPU, which is why hourly rates vary between them.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software fee meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Note that AWS may still bill separately for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Software charges resume once you start the instance again.
What is included in the software beyond the DNS server itself?
The image runs BIND9 DNS on Ubuntu 24.04 and comes with Webmin preinstalled. Webmin gives you a web portal to manage and configure DNS zones through a graphical interface instead of only the command line. This is included at every instance type; only the instance size changes the hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

BlueCat DNS & DHCP for AWS is a tailored solution designed to bridge the network modernization gap by providing proprietary DNS services for hybrid cloud environments. Furthermore, it uniquely addresses the challenge of delivering a DHCP service from the cloud to exclusively on-premises DHCP clients. This is done by on-premises clients routing their DHCP Unicast traffic to this cloud-hosted BlueCat instance.
According to industry research, 91% of malware uses the DNS protocol for command and control (C2), data exfiltration or to deliver malicious payloads. BlueCat Edge, via deployed Service Points v4, gives network and IT teams unprecedented access to DNS query data with which they can establish smarter policies, optimize traffic and meet stringent compliance and logging requirements.
