Overview
This AMI runs a self-hosted time tracking and timesheet application with MariaDB 11.8 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. It records working time against customers, projects and activities, with hourly and fixed rates, budgets, teams and roles, invoices, exports, reports and a REST API. The application (version 2.71.0) and MariaDB 11.8.9 are pinned and pre-installed in the AMI.
What Perimattic adds
Administrator created for you: during first-login setup a random 24-character password is generated on your server and the one administrator account, using the email you enter, is created before the site is published. Self-registration is off and the image has no default account. There are no default or shared credentials in the image. Apache provides HTTPS with a free Let's Encrypt certificate for your domain.
Limits you should know
No mail server is configured, so password-reset and notification emails need MAILER_URL set in /opt/app/docker-compose.yml. No plugins are installed. In our tests the application used about 90 to 140 MB and MariaDB about 115 to 140 MB, so a t3.small (2 GB) is the recommended starting size; larger teams need more.
Licence and attribution
The application is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 and MariaDB under the GPL v2. Built on the open-source Kimai (AGPL-3.0). Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Kevin Papst; Kimai is a trademark of its owner.
Getting Started Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Open https://your-domain and sign in as admin with the password printed at the end of setup
A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS.
This AMI is built and supported by Perimattic.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release.
- Application: Time Tracking and Timesheets 2.71.0 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
- Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
- TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
- Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
- A random super administrator password is generated at first login and given only to the application's console command, which creates the account before the site is published; there is no self-registration. Setup verifies that the password works, that a wrong password and the usual default logins are refused, that exactly one account exists and that anonymous API and page requests are refused.
- Application: time tracking application release 2.71.0 from the project's official image (AGPL-3.0, unmodified) with MariaDB 11.8.9 (both pinned). The session secret is generated per instance; the application answers only to the buyer's domain name.
- No SMTP is configured and no plugins are installed.
- Database: reachable only inside the Docker network.

Usage instructions
-
Launch an Instance
From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.
-
Choose the Recommended Instance Type
t3.small (2 GB of memory) is the recommended starting size: in our tests the application used about 90 to 140 MB and MariaDB about 115 to 140 MB. Larger teams and heavy reporting need more.
-
Configure Security Group
Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:
- 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
- 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
- 443 (HTTPS) - access to Time Tracking and Timesheets
-
Point a domain at the instance
Create a DNS A record (for example time.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.
-
Connect to the Instance
ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
-
First-Login Setup
The first SSH login runs a guided setup:
- Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
- Generates a random 24-character admin password, the database passwords and a 64-character session secret on your server
- Starts MariaDB and the application, creates the super administrator with the application's console command and checks that the password works, that a wrong password and the usual default logins are refused, that exactly one account exists and that nothing is readable anonymously
- Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
- Prints the URL and the admin credentials; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)
If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.
-
Access Time Tracking and Timesheets
Open https://<your-domain> and sign in as admin with the generated password (view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). Add users under System > Users; there is no self-registration.
-
Credentials
Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:
sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt
-
Manage the Services
cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart
Data is in MariaDB in /opt/app/mariadb and in /opt/app/var (uploads, plugins, logs): back up all of /opt/app or snapshot the volume before upgrades, and keep APP_SECRET from /opt/app/.env with the backup. Only your domain name is accepted. No mail server is configured: set MAILER_URL and MAILER_FROM in /opt/app/docker-compose.yml to enable email and password reset.
