If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run this VPN gateway on. There are three options: t3.micro, t3.small, and t3.medium. These represent different compute sizes, not feature tiers. Each larger instance provides more CPU and memory to handle more connections or higher traffic. You choose the size that fits your expected VPN load. Billing is usage-based, so charges accrue only while the instance runs. You can scale up or down by selecting a different instance size when you deploy.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the t3.micro, t3.small, and t3.medium hourly rates actually pay for?
Each rate covers the software running on one EC2 instance of that size, billed per hour. The instance size sets the CPU and memory available to the VPN gateway. Larger sizes handle more connections or higher traffic. You pick one size per deployment.
Am I charged when the VPN gateway instance is stopped or idle?
Hourly software charges accrue only while the instance runs. If you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops. Underlying AWS storage and other AWS resource fees may still apply while the instance is stopped, since those are billed separately by AWS.
How is billing structured — do I commit upfront or pay only for what I use?
Billing is usage-based with no upfront commitment. You are metered per instance-hour for whichever size you run. Charges accrue while the instance runs and stop when it stops. This suits variable or short-term VPN workloads where you want to avoid a fixed commitment.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
