Overview
This AMI runs ntfy, a self-hosted push notification service, on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Scripts and applications publish a message to a topic with a simple HTTP call, and phones, browsers and other clients subscribe to the topic to receive it. Version 2.37.2 is pinned and pre-installed in the AMI.
What Perimattic adds
Administrator created for you: a random 24-character password is generated on your server and the one administrator account, using the email you enter, is created during first-login setup, before the site is published. Access is closed by default, so every topic needs a login. Apache provides HTTPS with a free Let's Encrypt certificate for your domain.
Limits you should know
Download links for attachments are protected only by being random, and they expire after three hours. Attachments are limited to 15 MB. iOS instant notifications need the vendor's relay service, which is switched off. Some bundled notification sounds carry their own licences (Mixkit and Creative Commons). A t3.small (2 GB) is the recommended starting size.
Licence and attribution
Built on the open-source ntfy (dual licensed under Apache-2.0 and GPL-2.0), unmodified. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Philipp C. Heckel; ntfy is a trademark of its owner. The web app bundles notification sounds from Mixkit (Mixkit Free License) and notificationsounds.com (Creative Commons Attribution).
Getting Started Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Open https://your-domain/ and sign in as admin with the password printed at the end of setup Subscribe to a topic, then publish to it from a script with an access token
A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release.
- Application: ntfy 2.37.2 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
- Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
- TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
- Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
- The administrator (user admin) is created with ntfy's own command using a random 24-character password generated at first login; default access is deny-all and sign-up is closed, and setup verifies all of this before the site is published.
- ntfy 2.37.2 (Apache-2.0 and GPL-2.0, unmodified official image) runs as an unprivileged user on the loopback interface; server-sent events, JSON streams and websockets work through Apache.
- No upstream relay, email, Firebase or payment integration is configured; messages are cached for 24 hours and attachments for 3 hours.
Additional details
Usage instructions
-
Launch an Instance
From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.
-
Choose the Recommended Instance Type
t3.small (2 GB of memory) is the recommended size: ntfy itself used 15 to 55 MB in our tests and the whole host about 600 MB. Choose t3.medium or larger for many subscribers or large attachments.
-
Configure Security Group
Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:
- 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
- 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
- 443 (HTTPS) - access to ntfy
-
Point a domain at the instance
Create a DNS A record (for example ntfy.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.
-
Connect to the Instance
ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
-
First-Login Setup
The first SSH login runs a guided setup:
- Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
- Generates a random 24-character administrator password on your server
- Starts ntfy with default access deny-all, creates the administrator with ntfy's own command, then checks that the password works, that admin/admin, a wrong password and anonymous publishing, polling, streaming and websocket subscriptions are refused, that sign-up is closed and that a live subscription receives a message
- Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy (with websocket support) and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
- Prints the URL, username and password; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)
If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.
-
Access ntfy
Open https://<your-domain>/ and sign in as the user admin with the password printed at the end of setup (view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). The same file shows how to create an access token for your scripts, how to add users and how to grant them access to single topics.
-
Credentials
Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:
sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt
-
Manage the Services
cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart
Data is in /opt/app/cache (messages and attachments) and /opt/app/lib (the user database); back both up or snapshot the volume before upgrades. Publish with an access token (Authorization: Bearer header) rather than the password. Attachment links are not protected by the login.
Thank you for subscribing.
