You pay by the hour for a preconfigured Windows Server 2019 DNS virtual machine. The software price is the same across all options; what varies is the AWS EC2 instance type you pick. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, from small general-purpose types to compute-, memory-, and storage-optimized families, plus large bare-metal options. Larger instances offer more CPU, memory, and network capacity, which raises the hourly rate. Billing runs only while an instance runs, so you scale cost by choosing your instance size and shutting instances down when idle.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for a given instance type?
Each unit is one hour that a single DNS Server virtual machine runs on the AWS EC2 instance type you selected. You pay for one running instance per hour. Running two instances at once counts as two units per hour. The clock meters actual running time only.
Am I charged when the DNS server instance is stopped?
Software charges apply per hour only while an instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software charges. You may still pay separate AWS fees for attached storage and any assigned public IP address while the instance is stopped. Shut down idle instances to stop software charges.
Does picking a larger instance type change what the software does?
No. Every instance type runs the same preconfigured Windows Server 2019 DNS software. The instance type only changes the CPU, memory, network, and storage capacity available. Larger families raise the hourly rate but do not add DNS features. Pick a size that matches your query volume and client load.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

I used the previous version of the Windows DNS server but The Windows 2019 DNS server has good performance and an easy setup process over previous versions. The Response Rate Limiting (RRL) functionality is very good as you can limit the response rate and avoid DDoS attacks on the DNS server. The new PowerShell cmdlets are available for easy configure and use. It is more secure if a man-in-middle attack occurs to current the DNS cache D.A.N.E. (DNS base Authentication) system prevents it. The Microsoft Support is also good, So overall it is good for my organization.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes its update creates problems for me. Recently It was running without problem but after the update, it started showing DNS Stub Zones error, so I rolled back that update and It is working fine.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have privacy concerns in our organization and can not rely on an external/public DNS server, so Windows 2019 DNS server helps us to obtain this goal. We are able to apply traffic management and load balancing-related policies in our DNS server. It helped us to get enhanced security and we have full control on our traffic.

Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
The best part of the Windows 2019 DNS server is easy to deploy, Configure and Manage. We can easily configure DNS policies and based on DNS queries, the DNS Server responds very well. It is Secure as it is using TLS 1.2 in Transport Layer. The joining of an additional Domain Controller is very easy for failover.
What do you dislike about the product?
Transport Layer Security of DNS server is Secure, but it may be enhanced. As I don't face any problems while using DNS in Windows Server 2019. It is working fine in my Organization.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The response of the DNS query is now very quick, it will save time for the users. The DNS request hasn’t gone to the external server. So, It enhanced the privacy and security of the organization as we can monitor the traffic for threats. I have created different policies like Server based policies etc.
