Private Git Hosting - Running in Minutes, Hardened From Boot
Forgejo is the popular open source, self-hosted Git service - a lightweight, fast alternative to GitHub and GitLab. This cloudimg AMI delivers Forgejo 15.0 fully installed and production-hardened, so your team has a private Git server running within minutes of launch - no manual configuration, no open installer pages, no shared credentials.
Who This Is For
This AMI is built for small-to-mid engineering teams, agencies managing client repositories, and organizations that need private source control on their own infrastructure. Whether you are a DevOps lead consolidating tools for a 20-developer team or a startup that needs self-hosted CI pipelines without the overhead of GitLab, this image gets you there without the setup burden.
Example scenario: A 15-person development agency managing 40+ client repositories behind a VPC. Each developer pushes code over SSH, opens pull requests for review, and triggers Forgejo Actions CI pipelines - all on a single EC2 instance with no data leaving the private network.
Application Stack
The Forgejo server - a single Go binary serving both the API and web UI - runs behind nginx as a reverse proxy. PostgreSQL provides the datastore. Both the server and database bind to the loopback interface, minimizing the network attack surface.
Secure By Default - Not Just a Claim
Unlike a default Forgejo install where the installer page is publicly accessible and registration is open, this AMI ships locked down from the first boot:
- A one-shot service generates fresh SECRET_KEY, INTERNAL_TOKEN, and OAuth2 JWT secrets unique to your instance
- Database migrations run automatically
- A single administrator account is created with a per-instance password written to a root-only file
- Open registration is disabled and the installer page is locked
- No shared or default credentials ship in the image
The result: zero manual hardening steps and no window of vulnerability between launch and configuration.
Ready To Use
Sign in as the administrator, create your first repository, push code over HTTPS or SSH, open pull requests and issues, and invite your team. Enable Forgejo Actions for built-in CI, host packages, maintain wikis, and conduct code reviews. Enable registration or add users from the admin panel when you are ready to scale.

Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Usage instructions
Connect via SSH on port 22 as the default login user for your operating system variant (the user guide lists it per variant; on Ubuntu it is 'ubuntu'). Forgejo is served on port 80 through nginx (the server listens on 127.0.0.1:3000). Retrieve the generated administrator login with: sudo cat /root/forgejo-credentials.txt. Browse to http://<instance-public-ip>/ and sign in with the username and password shown. The health endpoint http://<instance-public-ip>/api/healthz is open. Services are managed with systemctl (forgejo, postgresql, nginx). To enable HTTPS, follow the Let's Encrypt section of the user guide.
