See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the compute instance running this Maven build environment on Ubuntu. The 21 options map to different AWS EC2 instance types, not software tiers. Each option carries the same preinstalled Maven and Java build software plus maintenance support. Pricing scales with the size and family of the instance you pick. General-purpose (t2, t3, m3, m4, m5), compute-optimized (c3, c4, c5), and memory-optimized (r3, r4, r5) families are available. Larger instances add CPU, memory, or both. You control cost by matching instance size to your build workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for the hourly rate on each instance type?
Each option runs one AWS EC2 virtual machine with Apache Maven and an OpenJDK runtime preinstalled on Ubuntu. The instance type you pick sets the CPU and memory. For example, r-family instances give more memory, while c-family instances give more compute. Maintenance support is included on every option.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or shut down?
Hourly software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the software fee. Underlying AWS storage costs for the attached volume may still apply while the instance is stopped. You control cost by running the instance only when you need to build.
How do I move to a different instance size if my build workload grows?
Pricing scales with the instance you launch, so you change cost by selecting a different type. You stop the current instance and launch a bigger one, such as moving from t3.medium to m5.large. The Maven software stays the same across all 21 options; only compute and memory change.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
