You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this hardened Rocky Linux 9 image on. Every listed dimension maps to one AWS instance size, so pricing scales with the compute you choose. Options cover general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU or accelerator families, in sizes from small through 4xlarge. Larger instances within a family carry a higher hourly rate. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment. Standard AWS infrastructure charges apply separately from the software rate.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover, and what am I paying for on top of the software rate?
Each hourly rate covers running one EC2 instance of the chosen type with the hardened Rocky Linux 9 image. You pay per hour the instance runs. Standard AWS infrastructure charges, such as compute, storage, and data transfer, are billed separately by AWS and apply on top of the software rate.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running instance-hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay AWS for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Why do prices differ so widely across the listed instance types?
Each dimension maps to a distinct EC2 instance type with different compute, memory, storage, or accelerator resources. General-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU or accelerator families each carry their own hourly rate. Larger sizes within a family cost more per hour. You choose the type that fits your workload.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
