Overview

A well configured Cloud workload can have a 78% reduction in energy consumption and a 93% reduction in carbon emissions which can significantly improve your sustainability position. To achieve those goals requires some care and review to ensure cloud workloads are deployed and operating optimally and sustainably.

The AWS Well-Architected Sustainability Review is a 1 day review followed by an optional remediation undertaken by Telstra Purple to assess an agreed workload against the six pillars of the AWS Well-Architect Framework including: Operational Excellence. running and monitoring systems and continually improving processes and procedures.

Guiding Principles

The most recent sixth Sustainability pillar focusses on improvement of sustainability outcomes for your AWS workloads utilising AWS native tooling and industry sustainability principles:

Understand impact. Establish a baseline against which improvements may be made and measured.

Establish sustainability goals. Establishing a sustainability goal will help to balance the reduction initiatives against other competing concerns.

Maximize utilisation. There simply is no better way to reduce consumption than to migrate to cloud and optimise the utilisation to remove wastage form the workload.

Adopt new offerings. Cloud architectures are not static, continued investment in the cloud platforms will enable new more efficient services.

Use managed services. A good cloud managed services can take on the “continual improvement” aspect of optimisation by measuring and adjusting the running services to be more optimal.

Reduce the downstream impact. Being aware of, estimating and reducing the footprint of the customer consuming your service is also an important consideration to reduce overall impact.
