Flatcar Container Linux LTS is a Long Term Support edition of Flatcar Container Linux, ideal for production container environments requiring the highest stability and security.
Flatcar Container Linux LTS is a self-updating operating system designed for containers, making it ideal for running Kubernetes and other container platforms. It is suitable for anyone deploying containerized applications, particularly those seeking to do so securely or at scale.
Why users choose Flatcar Container Linux LTS
Security: A minimal distribution with immutable file system meets NIST recommendations for application container security ("Whenever possible, organizations should use these minimalistic OSs to reduce their attack surfaces and mitigate the typical risks [of] general-purpose OSs.")
Auto-updating: With Flatcar's robust auto-update mechanism, it's easy to keep your entire fleet up-to-date with the latest capabilities and security patches, and roll-back in the event of an upgrade issue on a specific instance.
Reduced complexity: As a minimal distribution, Flatcar includes just those components you need to deploy your containers, and nothing more. Also, its immutable file system and auto-update mechanism means it requires minimal operational support.
Long Term support: Flatcar Container Linux LTS is maintained for an extended lifetime of up to 18 months, making it ideal for users valuing stability over new features.
Highlights

If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You run this software at no license charge. The dimensions map to specific EC2 instance types, from small burstable sizes like t3.nano and t2.micro up to large compute, memory, storage, and GPU instances such as c5.24xlarge, x1e.32xlarge, and p4d.24xlarge, including bare-metal options like u-24tb1.metal. Pricing is set to zero for every instance type, billed hourly. Your actual cost comes from the AWS compute you select, not the operating system itself. Choose the instance type that matches your container workload's CPU, memory, storage, and GPU needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly dimension represent for billing?
Each dimension maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type, such as t3.small or c5.24xlarge. One unit is one running instance of that type, billed per hour it runs. The operating system itself carries a zero software charge, so you pay only for the AWS compute you run.
Am I charged for the software when an instance is stopped?
The software price is set to zero for every instance type, so there is no license charge whether running or stopped. Your only cost comes from AWS compute, which meters running instance-hours. Stopped instances stop accruing compute charges, though attached AWS storage may still incur separate fees.
Can I run this operating system outside of AWS?
Flatcar Container Linux runs across cloud providers, virtualization platforms, and bare-metal environments. It uses read-only system images and atomic updates. On AWS Marketplace you deploy it on the EC2 instance types listed, matched to your container workload. Deployment elsewhere falls outside this Marketplace listing.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
