You pay by the hour for a Ruby image running on Ubuntu 26, billed only while an instance runs. Pricing is set per EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance size and family you choose. Options span general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, GPU, and high-memory families. Within each family, larger sizes carry higher hourly rates than smaller ones. This charge covers the vendor's software and support and is added on top of standard AWS EC2 infrastructure costs. Run more instances or larger sizes, and your total scales accordingly.

The software charge meters running time per instance-hour. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage charges may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from the vendor's software rate. You pay the software fee only while the instance runs.
Each running instance bills separately at the hourly rate for its instance type. Total software cost is the sum across all active instances. Running more instances, or larger sizes, raises the total. AWS EC2 infrastructure charges apply on top of the vendor's software fee for each instance.
