Oracle21c XE Resource Limits
Oracle Database 21c XE is a free-to-use edition with the following built-in resource constraints:
Maximum2 CPU threads
Maximum 2 GB RAM allocated to the database instance
Maximum 12 GB of user data storage
These limits make XE ideal for development, testing, prototyping, and small departmental workloads rather than large-scale production environments.
Ideal Use Cases
Development and prototyping: Application developers building Oracle-based solutions can use this AMI as a cloud-hosted dev/test environment before migrating to Standard or Enterprise Edition for production.
Small business departmental apps: Teams running inventory systems, CRM modules, or financial reporting tools that fit within XE resource limits benefit from Oracle's reliability without Enterprise licensing costs.
Database training and evaluation: DBAs and students evaluating Oracle features or preparing for certification can launch a ready-to-use instance without manual setup.
AWS Integration Points
Amazon S3: Configure RMAN backups to S3 for durable, cost-effective database backup storage.
Amazon CloudWatch: Monitor instance health, CPU utilization, and disk I/O metrics for your Oracle database host.
AWS Systems Manager: Manage patching and configuration of the underlying OEL 7 operating system.
Amazon EBS: Use provisioned IOPS or gp3 volumes for predictable database storage performance.
Security Considerations
The AMI is built with security in mind. Oracle21c XE supports Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) for data at rest and Oracle Net encryption for data in transit. We recommend buyers configure VPC security groups to restrict port 1521 access to trusted IP ranges and enable SSH key-based authentication only.

You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance you pick to run this preconfigured Oracle Database 21c XE on OEL 7 image. Pricing is not tiered by features. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, and every listed type runs the same software. Your hourly rate scales with the size and family of the instance you select. Smaller instances like t3.medium carry lower rates, while large memory, compute, storage, or GPU instances cost more. Choose an instance that fits your workload; the software stays identical across all options. Minimum requirements are 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and what is not included in the software charge?
The hourly rate covers the preconfigured Oracle Database 21c XE on OEL 7 image running on your chosen EC2 instance. AWS charges for storage and data transfer apply separately. The image includes the database service, sqlplus, the SSM agent, and CloudWatch agent, plus 24/7 vendor support with a 24-hour response target.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. When you stop the instance, the software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume may still apply while the instance is stopped. Start the instance again to resume software billing.
If I move to a larger instance type, does my rate change automatically?
Yes. Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. If you launch or resize to a different type, you pay that type's rate for the hours it runs. The change is not automatic; you choose the type when launching. The software stays identical across all types.
