Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the software running on a chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to one specific instance size, so there are no separate feature tiers or plans. Pricing scales with the compute power you select. Smaller instances like t3.micro cost less per hour, while large and specialized instances such as GPU, high-memory, or storage-optimized families cost more. You pick the instance that fits your workload, and billing follows actual hours used. The same server and client tools ship across every instance option.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly charge covers the software running on one Amazon EC2 instance of the size you select. It includes the Chef backend server plus all client tools. The rate follows the instance family and size you pick, and billing counts actual hours the instance runs.
The software charge meters running hours only. When you stop an instance, the hourly software fee stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage costs for the stopped instance may still apply separately. To avoid software charges, power the instance off rather than leaving it running idle.
Match the instance to your node count and orchestration load. General-purpose families suit typical Chef Server duties. Memory-optimized, storage-optimized, or compute-optimized families fit heavier workloads. GPU and specialized families cost more per hour and are rarely needed for a Chef backend. The same server and tools ship on every option.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. goiardi contains no cryptographically stored data and does not perform any encryption at rest.
Local X509 PKI may be utilised to manage network-based TLS. All certificates and keys are stored locally in /etc/pki and it is completely at your discretion to regenerate any of these at any time; the product will transparently operate on any consistent set of configured keys.
goiardi ships with openssl, step-cli and other popular tools to facilitate certificate regeneration.

The SSH user for your instance is ec2-user. You can connect by using the private key of the key pair you launched the instance with:
