SoftwareOne Trusted Research Environment (TRE) on AWS

SoftwareOne Trusted Research Environments (TREs) provide secure access to sensitive data, enabling research while controlling data movement to meet governance requirements. It brings together scalable cloud infrastructure, built-in security controls, and self-service tools that enable research teams to work efficiently within clearly defined governance frameworks.

The offering is built in two clear layers:

Secure Research Environment (SRE) The foundational AWS environment for sensitive research workloads. It includes multi-account architecture, identity, security and compliance guardrails, network and connectivity controls, operations, monitoring, and continuous compliance.

Trusted Research Environment (TRE) The governed research layer built on top of the SRE foundation. It provides the secure core for managing and analyzing sensitive data through:

• Data Platform Governed data storage, lifecycle management, and ETL capabilities to prepare datasets for analysis.
• Data Review and Transfer Component (DRTC) Controlled data movement into and out of the TRE, ensuring each exchange is authorized and auditable.
• Virtual Research Environment (VRE) AWS Research and Engineering Studio (RES) which provides self-service research workspaces where approved users can access right-sized AWS compute, authorized tools, and project-specific data within defined controls.
