See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run. All dimensions deliver the same SFTP file transfer software on Linux 9 (based on RHEL® 9); they differ only in the underlying compute you select. Options span burstable t2, t3, and t3a families for lighter or variable workloads, plus general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n families for steadier demand. Within each family, sizes scale from nano and micro up to metal. Your hourly rate rises as you choose more CPU and memory. You are billed only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit map to for this product?
One unit is one running EC2 instance measured per hour. Each instance size in the table maps to a set amount of CPU and memory. You pick one size, launch it, and pay the hourly software rate for every hour that instance runs.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software rate meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS fees for storage or reserved resources while stopped. Restarting the instance resumes hourly software billing.
What do I need to configure to start using the SFTP server after launch?
You open TCP port 22 in the Amazon firewall, then find the instance IP in your AWS account. You generate a key pair and connect using an SSH client with the ec2-user login. From there you create SFTP users and transfer files.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources.
