Overview
This AMI runs a self-hosted file sync and share platform (community edition) with MariaDB 10.11 and a Valkey cache on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. You store files in libraries and upload, download and share them through the web interface, with upload and download links on your own domain. The application (version 14.0.9), MariaDB 10.11.19 and Valkey 9.1.3 are pinned and pre-installed in the AMI.
What Perimattic adds
Administrator created for you: during first-login setup a random 24-character password is generated on your server and the one administrator account, using the email you enter, is created before the site is published. There is no registration page. There are no default or shared credentials in the image. Apache provides HTTPS with a free Let's Encrypt certificate for your domain.
Limits you should know
This is the community edition: features of the vendor's commercial edition are not available. No mail server is configured, so invitations and password-reset emails need one set in System Admin. WebDAV, the document editor, the notification server and the AI and metadata services are not run. Files are stored in /opt/app/data on the instance's root volume, so size the volume for your data and take EBS snapshots to back up. In our tests the server used about 0.7 to 0.8 GB and MariaDB about 0.15 GB, so a t3.medium (4 GB) is the recommended size.
Licence and attribution
The server is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 with an additional permission to link with OpenSSL; the web interface is Apache-2.0; MariaDB is GPL v2. Built on the open-source Seafile (AGPL-3.0). Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Seafile Ltd.; Seafile is a trademark of its owner.
Getting Started Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Open https://your-domain and sign in with your email address and the password printed at the end of setup
A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release.
- Application: File Sync and Share Platform 14.0.9 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
- Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
- TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
- Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
- A random administrator password is generated at first login and given, together with the database root password, only to the one-time install start of the server container, which is then recreated without them, before the site is published; there is no registration page. Setup verifies that the password works, that a wrong password and the usual default logins are refused, that exactly one account exists and that anonymous requests are refused.
- Application: file sync and share server release 14.0.9, community edition, from the project's official image (AGPL-3.0 with an OpenSSL linking permission, unmodified) with MariaDB 10.11.19 and Valkey 9.1.3 (all pinned). The token-signing key is generated per instance.
- No SMTP is configured; WebDAV, the document editor, the notification server and the AI and metadata services are not run.
- Database and cache: reachable only inside the Docker network.

Usage instructions
-
Launch an Instance
From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.
-
Choose the Recommended Instance Type
t3.medium (4 GB of memory) is the recommended size: in our tests the server used about 0.7 to 0.8 GB and MariaDB about 0.15 GB. Files are stored on the instance's root volume (/opt/app/data), so size the volume for your data.
-
Configure Security Group
Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:
- 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
- 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
- 443 (HTTPS) - access to File Sync and Share Platform
-
Point a domain at the instance
Create a DNS A record (for example files.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.
-
Connect to the Instance
ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
-
First-Login Setup
The first SSH login runs a guided setup:
- Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
- Generates a random 24-character admin password, the database and cache passwords and a token-signing key on your server
- Starts MariaDB and Valkey, installs the server once with the admin password and the database root password, then recreates the server container without them
- Checks that the password works, that a wrong password and the usual default logins are refused, that exactly one account exists, that there is no registration page, that anonymous requests are refused and that the server is the community edition
- Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
- Prints the URL and the admin credentials; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)
If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.
-
Access File Sync and Share Platform
Open https://<your-domain> and sign in with your admin email and the generated password (view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). Add users under System Admin > Users; there is no registration page.
-
Credentials
Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:
sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt
-
Manage the Services
cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart
Files are stored in /opt/app/data (libraries as blocks, configuration, avatars, logs) and accounts and file metadata in MariaDB in /opt/app/mariadb, both on the instance's root volume: size it for your data, or move /opt/app to an extra EBS volume, and snapshot the volume before upgrades. Keep JWT_PRIVATE_KEY from /opt/app/.env with the backup. No mail server is configured: set one in System Admin > Settings. This is the community edition.
