Overview
The Business Involvement Filter was developed to systematically screen 32,000+ companies for business involvements and allows investors to align their values across public-equity and fixed-income portfolios.
We have developed 11 standard screens with well-defined and transparent business involvements criteria. These screens can be implemented directly in an investment strategy, or dynamically calibrated to a client?s unique bespoke preferences.
The Business Involvement Filter enables investors across institutional and retail markets - to determine the business activities of companies based on their own values, empowering everyone to make more informed decisions on how and where they invest their money.
Methodology
The Business Involvement Filter Screens are calculated daily for the 11 different business segments. The screens methodology can be described through a 3-layer process:
- Data collection
- Threshold Assessment
- Flag generation
Layer 1 - Data Collection
In the first layer two different sets of data are collected. Each filter uses one of these types of data, depending on what is most suitable for that screen.
-
Revenue data: for each company the percentage revenue associated with certain business segment is collected. These data are collected from company 10-K filings and financial statements.
-
Involvement data: for each company a binary involvement datapoint (Y/N does the company sell products or services within certain business streams) are collected. The business-involvement data tracks products and services sold by companies as reported on company websites or in company reports and presentations.
Layer 2 - Threshold Assessment
In the second layer, a revenue threshold is set of 5%. For each company within the Business Involvement universe, for the 7 business segments that use a revenue filter, a "Yes" is assigned where a company generates more than 5% of its total recorded revenue from a given business activity and "No" where it does not.
No further manipulation is needed with regards to the Involvement data because it is collected as a binary data point ? that is, a "Yes" where the company sells products or services within a given business stream and a "No" where the company does not.
Layer 3 - Flag Generation
In the final layer the threshold values generated in the previous stage are combined into the output field for each business segment to provide compact, valuable information to the user.
A Flag: is a binary "Yes" or "No" value. Where a "Yes" indicates that the company either generates more than 5% of its revenue from a given business segment or has business involvements in the business segment. Conversely, a "No" indicates that the company generates less than 5% of its revenue from a given business segment or has no business involvements in the business segment.
