You pay by the hour for a preconfigured image running Apache Tomcat 10 on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Pricing is not tiered by feature. Instead, you pick one EC2 instance type, and your hourly software rate matches that choice. The options span several instance families, including t2, t3, t3a, m4, m5, m6, and m7 generations. Within each family, rates scale with instance size, from nano and micro up through metal sizes. Larger instances with more compute and memory carry higher hourly rates. You select the instance that fits your workload and change it as needs shift.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What am I actually paying for with the hourly software rate on each instance type?
You pay for a preconfigured image with Apache Tomcat 10 running on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. The hourly software rate covers this image and is set per instance type. Underlying AWS compute and storage costs are billed separately by AWS on top of the software rate.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when the instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running time only. When you stop an instance, the hourly software charge stops. A stopped instance may still incur AWS storage fees for its attached volumes, but those are separate from the Tomcat image software charge described here.
How does my cost change if I switch to a different instance type?
The hourly software rate matches whichever instance type you run. Within a family, rates scale with size. If you move to a larger size or a different generation, your hourly rate changes to match that new instance. You can switch as your workload needs shift.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources.
