Overview
An Optimization and Licensing Assessment (OLA) offers great insight for licensing scenarios and inputs to a migration journey. Another key component is a right sizing exercise, which assesses the current on-premises utilization (CPU, Memory, Disk) to recommend a cloud-based “right sized” instance/virtual machine type. Right sizing in terms of provisioned storage, may further reduce backup volumes, or backup licensing expenditure.
A common challenge when planning to move workloads to a public cloud like AWS is whether to Bring Your Own License (BYOL) or use included hourly licensing. Microsoft licensing for Windows Server and SQL Server are most often than not the sole focus of a license optimization exercise.
