You pay by the hour for Windows Server 2016 with vendor support, billed only while an instance runs. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance size and family you choose. Options range from small burstable types to large memory, compute, storage, GPU, and bare-metal machines. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware carry higher hourly rates. There is no upfront commitment; you scale cost up or down by selecting different instance types or running more or fewer hours.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What am I paying for beyond the Windows Server 2016 operating system in each hourly rate?
Your hourly rate covers a Windows Server 2016 machine image plus vendor support from Supported Images. The image ships with current updates preinstalled. If you hit problems, you open a support ticket with your subscription ID and product name, and a representative follows up.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges meter running time only. A fully stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage costs for the attached disk may still apply while the instance is stopped, since that is separate from this listing's per-hour rate.
What decides which hourly rate I pay across all these instance options?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, and you pay the rate tied to whichever type you launch. The instance family and size drive the cost. Running several instances bills each one separately by the hour, so total cost adds up across every active instance.
