This listing charges nothing for the software itself. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is free of license fees, so each dimension carries no software cost. The dimensions map to specific AWS Arm-based EC2 instance types, billed per hour of use. You pick the instance that fits your workload, from small shared options through large and bare-metal sizes. Your hourly cost scales with the instance you select and the AWS compute rate, not with any Ubuntu charge. Choosing a bigger instance means more compute capacity, but the operating system remains free across every option.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the instance-type dimensions like m8g.12xlarge or c7g.large actually represent for billing?
Each dimension maps to one AWS Arm-based EC2 instance size. You are billed per hour that the chosen instance runs. Larger sizes provide more virtual CPUs and memory. The Ubuntu software adds no charge, so your hourly cost reflects only the AWS compute rate for that instance.
Am I charged for the software when an instance is stopped or idle?
The Ubuntu operating system carries no license fee, so it accrues no software charge whether running, stopped, or idle. Hourly compute charges from AWS apply only while the instance runs. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the operating system itself remains free.
Does moving to a larger instance size change what I pay for Ubuntu itself?
No. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is free of license fees regardless of how many instances you run or their size. Switching from a small instance to a larger one changes only the AWS hourly compute rate. The operating system cost stays at zero across every dimension.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

I have been using this AMI ARM64 intensively since a few weeks. I have to admit that through time I simply forgot I was using an ARM machine! All of the tools I need are there and/or available for ARM. And it is cheaper and likely to consume less power.
