    Common engagement shapes

    Platform selection. Independent senior counsel on which DXP, CMS, DAM, or commerce platform fits a specific organisation and roadmap. Typically four weeks. Output is a documented recommendation with reasoning the procurement team can defend.

    Programme rescue assessment. Senior judgement on whether a programme that is in trouble can be recovered, restructured, or has to be restarted. Typically four to six weeks. Output is a board-readable position with options.

    M&A integration counsel. Senior counsel on how to structure CMS and DXP integration in the context of an acquisition. Typically four to eight weeks. Output is an integration playbook the merged team can execute.

    AI strategy guidance. Senior counsel on where AI fits in the buyer's specific roadmap, what foundations have to be in place first, and which initiatives are most likely to succeed. Typically eight to twelve weeks. Output is a documented AI roadmap with sequencing and dependencies.

    Board-facing programme communications. Senior support for an executive sponsor presenting a complex programme position to a board or steering committee. Typically four to six weeks. Output is the briefing material itself, plus stakeholder readouts where required.

    Why this shape works

    Most transformation programmes hit moments where senior judgement is the bottleneck rather than execution capacity. Bringing in a permanent CTO or CDO to address one decision is overhead the buyer does not need. Hiring a Big Four advisory firm produces a 200-page deck and a delivery team that wants to stay. Advisory is built to be in between: senior enough to carry weight, narrow enough to be commissioned for one decision, structured to disengage cleanly at the end of the time-box.

    How it runs

    The engagement starts with a scoping conversation that defines the decision or window, the deliverables, the time-box, and the named consultant.     Advisory engagements are sized in standard time-boxes: four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks, or twelve weeks. The right time-box is determined at scoping rather than left open-ended, and the engagement is priced against the chosen time-box rather than against day rates.

    The named senior consultant is contracted as the consistent presence across the engagement window. Where multiple specialisms are required (e.g. M&A integration counsel may require both content and commerce specialism), the named consultant is the lead and additional senior bench is drawn against the specific need.

    Advisory engagements deliberately do not include implementation work. Where the buyer wants the recommendation implemented, the engagement transitions to a project, a transformation programme, or a Grove engagement at the appropriate commercial structure. The clean transition is the discipline that keeps Advisory honest.
