If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and CPU capacity you choose. The options span several instance families: t2 and t3 for general-purpose and burstable workloads, m3, m4, and m5 for balanced compute, c3, c4, and c5 for compute-focused tasks, and r3, r4, and r5 for memory-intensive work. Larger instance sizes cost more per hour. You select the instance that fits your workload and pay only for the hours you use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for these instance dimensions?
Each dimension bills per hour for one running EC2 instance of that type. The rate reflects the instance's CPU, memory, and compute capacity. You run one instance, you pay for one instance-hour. Running multiple instances multiplies the hourly charge by the number active.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
Software charges meter running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software fees. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage costs for attached volumes, but the software licence bills active running hours. Charges resume when you restart the instance.
How do I move to a different instance size if my workload grows?
Each dimension maps to one instance type, so you select the size that fits your workload. To change size, you launch a different instance type and stop the old one. Billing follows whichever instance is running. Managed maintenance support is included with the listing.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
