Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen AWS EC2 instance type. Pricing is not tiered by feature. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so your rate scales with the compute you select. Options span burstable T2, T3, and T3a families for lighter, variable workloads, plus M3, M4, M5, and related M5a, M5d, M5n, M5dn, and M5ad families for steady general-purpose use. Sizes range from nano up to bare-metal instances. You only pay for the hours you run, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay the software rate for each hour the chosen EC2 instance runs. One unit equals one hour of one running instance of the size you select. Rates differ by instance type, so a nano instance and a bare-metal instance bill at different hourly rates.
The software rate meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Note that AWS may still bill separately for storage attached to a stopped instance, but that is an AWS infrastructure fee, not the software rate.
Open port 22 (TCP) in the firewall, then find the instance IP in your AWS account. You connect over SSH using a generated private key, and you can manage SFTP users with standard server commands. No paid add-ons are billed beyond the hourly rate.
