Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run this SFTP server on. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance type, so your rate scales with the compute resources you choose. Smaller shared-CPU types like the t2, t3, and t3a families fit lighter file-transfer workloads. Larger general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5ad, and m5dn families handle heavier demand, up to bare-metal options. There are no tiers or commitments. You start and stop instances as needed, and billing follows actual hours of use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay for each hour a chosen EC2 instance runs the software. The instance type you pick sets the CPU and memory available. One running instance accrues charges by the hour. Larger types like the metal options provide more compute, while shared-CPU t2, t3, and t3a types suit lighter file transfers.
Software charges follow running hours only. When you stop an instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the volume may still apply while the instance is stopped. You control cost by starting and stopping instances as needed, with no commitment or minimum.
You open port 22 (TCP) in your AWS firewall, then connect using an SSH key and the ec2-user login. From there you add, remove, lock, or unlock SFTP users with server commands. A client application handles file transfers over port 22. These steps do not change your hourly rate.
