You pay by the hour for Minimal Ubuntu Server 26.04, billed only for the time each instance runs. Pricing follows the EC2 instance type you select, so the software rate scales with the compute size you choose. The list spans several instance families: t2, t3, and t3a for burstable general-purpose workloads, plus m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n for steady general-purpose needs. Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and metal. Larger sizes carry higher hourly rates. There is no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for the hourly rate on each instance type?
You get a running virtual machine loaded with Minimal Ubuntu Server 26.04. The instance type you pick sets the vCPU count, memory, and storage. You connect over SSH using a key pair and the login name ubuntu. The hourly rate covers the software licence for that running instance.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when the instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS fees for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
How do I choose between the t-family and m-family instance types for billing?
Both bill per hour with no upfront commitment. The t2, t3, and t3a families suit burstable workloads with variable demand. The m3, m4, m5, and related families suit steady, continuous workloads. Larger sizes within any family carry higher hourly rates, so match the size to your compute need.
