Apache Guacamole Remote Desktop on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by ProvenCloud [IN]

     Info
    Sold by: ProvenCloud
    Deployed on AWS
This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for a secure, ready-to-use Apache Guacamole 1.6.0 remote desktop gateway. Reach your Windows, Linux and other servers over RDP, VNC and SSH from any web browser, with no client software to install and unique passwords for every instance.

    Overview

Apache Guacamole is an open source clientless remote desktop gateway. It lets you open Windows desktops, Linux desktops and server terminals over RDP, VNC and SSH straight from a web browser, so your team can work from any computer without installing remote desktop clients or opening those ports to the internet. This image gives IT teams, support desks and remote workers a working browser bastion in minutes. It is a gateway, not a desktop: you point it at the machines you already have.

What is included: Apache Guacamole 1.6.0 (the web application and the guacd proxy built from the official source) on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Apache Tomcat 9 with OpenJDK 21, PostgreSQL 16 for users and connections, nginx serving the site on HTTP and HTTPS, and Webmin 2.670 for server administration. Security is on by default: no password ships in the image. On first boot every instance sets its own Guacamole administrator, PostgreSQL and Webmin passwords and creates its own HTTPS certificate and server keys. PostgreSQL listens only on the server itself, and SSH accepts key-based login only.

What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. Apache Guacamole is open source software licensed under Apache-2.0. Apache, Apache Guacamole and Guacamole are trademarks of The Apache Software Foundation. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud and is not endorsed by The Apache Software Foundation.

    Highlights

    • Ready in minutes: launch the instance, open its public IP in your browser and sign in. Guacamole, its proxy, PostgreSQL and Webmin are already installed and configured, with no setup wizard to complete.
    • Secure by default: no shared or default passwords. Every instance sets its own Guacamole, PostgreSQL and Webmin passwords and its own HTTPS certificate on first boot, the database stays private and SSH is key-only.
    • One browser bastion for all your servers: add RDP, VNC and SSH connections once, then open any desktop or terminal from a browser tab, with copy and paste, file transfer and per-user access control.

    Dimensions summary

You pay by the hour for the running software, and the rate depends on the EC2 instance type you choose. Each dimension matches one instance size across families like general purpose, compute, memory, storage, and accelerated computing. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or GPU resources carry higher hourly rates. You pick the instance that fits your workload. A 5-day free trial applies, after which the hourly software charge runs alongside your own EC2 and storage costs, all billed by AWS on one bill.

    Top-of-mind questions for buyers

The software charge meters running instance-hours. When you stop or power off the instance, the hourly software charge does not accrue. You may still pay AWS for the attached storage, since the root volume persists. Billing restarts when you start the instance again.
One hour covers the running software image on a single EC2 instance of the type you select. The image bundles the remote desktop gateway, a database, and a web admin console, with no licence key required. The rate changes with instance size but the software contents stay the same.
They are separate. The hourly software charge is for the image itself. Your EC2 instance cost and the storage for the root volume are billed by AWS on your usual cloud bill. Both the software charge and your AWS infrastructure costs appear together on that one invoice.

    Vendor refund policy

Software charges are billed hourly, only while your instance runs. You can stop charges at any time by terminating the instance or cancelling your subscription. Charges already incurred are not refundable.

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Usage instructions

Once the instance is running, wait for the instance health checks to pass, then allow about five minutes for the first-boot setup to finish. Enter http://<instance-public-ip> into your browser (https://<instance-public-ip> also works; accept the one-time warning for its self-signed certificate). You will then see the Guacamole sign-in page, enter admin as Username and your instance ID as password. You can access the Webmin page at port 8000, so your URL will be http://<instance-public-ip>:8000 and use admin as username and your instance ID as password. You can also access your instance via SSH using the username ubuntu and your Amazon private key.

To reach your first machine, open the user menu at the top right and choose Settings, then Connections, then New Connection. Choose the protocol (RDP, VNC or SSH) and, under Parameters, Network, enter that machine's hostname or IP address and port, then its username and password or private key under Authentication. Leave the Guacamole proxy parameters (guacd) section empty. Save, go back to Home and click the connection. This server is a gateway: it opens your other machines in the browser and does not provide a desktop of its own.

Required inbound ports: 22 (SSH), 80 and 443 (Guacamole) and 8000 (Webmin). For security, allow ports 22 and 8000 only from your own IP address. Your other machines only need to accept RDP, VNC or SSH from this server.

Your instance ID is shown in the EC2 console, for example i-0123456789abcdef0. Allow about five minutes after launch for the first-boot setup to finish before you sign in. Every instance sets its own passwords on first boot, so no two instances share a password.

Change your passwords after the first sign-in: connect over SSH and run sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/pass_guacamole.sh for Guacamole, pass_postgres.sh for PostgreSQL or pass_webmin.sh for Webmin, from the same folder.

For production, point your own domain at the instance and replace the self-signed certificate with a trusted one.
