You pay by the hour for a ready-to-run PostgreSQL image on Windows Server 2025 Datacenter. Pricing scales with the EC2 instance size you choose. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type across several families. The t2, t3, and t3a families cover burstable general-purpose sizes, from nano through 2xlarge. The m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n families cover larger general-purpose sizes, up to 24xlarge and bare-metal options. Larger instances offer more CPU, memory, and networking, so hourly cost rises with capacity. You run the software only as long as needed.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billable hour cover for the instance I choose?
You pay for each hour the EC2 instance runs with the PostgreSQL image installed. The rate covers the software licence and the Windows Server 2025 Datacenter operating system. The instance type you pick sets the CPU, memory, and networking capacity. Larger types cost more per hour.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached disk while the instance is stopped. Start it again to resume software billing.
Can I move to a different instance type later if my workload grows?
Yes. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, so switching sizes changes your hourly rate. You stop the instance, change its type, then restart it. Billing then follows the new type's hourly rate. There is no upfront commitment tying you to one size.
