Derived from BSD, the version of UNIX developed at the University of California, Berkeley, FreeBSD has been continually developed by a large community for more than 30 years. The many options span compute-optimized (c-series), general-purpose (m-series, a1, t4g), memory-optimized (r-series, x-series), and storage-optimized (i-series, im4gn, is4gen) families, plus graphics (g5g) and HPC (hpc7g) types. Sizes range from nano and medium up to 48xlarge and bare-metal instances. Your cost scales with the size and family you pick. Larger instances cost more per hour.

The FreeBSD operating system carries no software charge. You pay only the hourly AWS EC2 rate for the arm64 instance type you select. Each dimension maps to one Graviton-based instance type. Underlying AWS storage and data-transfer fees apply separately based on your setup.
Charges accrue per running instance-hour. A fully stopped instance stops accruing the hourly instance charge. However, attached AWS storage volumes may still incur separate storage fees while the instance is stopped. The software itself is free, so no license charge applies either way.
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. Standard types like c8g.large or m7g.xlarge run as virtual machines. Types ending in 'metal' (for example c8g.metal-48xl) run as bare-metal servers with direct hardware access. You pick one type per running instance, billed hourly.

This AMI launches with sshd running and the SSH public key you provide at launch time allowed to log in as ec2-user with passwordless "su" to root. To use this AMI, ensure that your EC2 security group allows SSH (tcp/22) from your location, and then "ssh ec2-user@<Instance IP address>".
