Mendix has been SAP's main partner for enterprise low-code development since 2017 and was acquired by Siemens in 2019. As a result, it's uniquely positioned as an enterprise low-code development platform for manufacturers who want to transform their business with rapid application development.
Mendix helps your manufacturing domain experts collaborate directly with professional developers to build tens or even hundreds of enterprise-grade web and mobile apps at speed and scale, all running on a single platform. It's up to 10x faster than traditional coding, which means you can build more apps and keep up with business demand for digital transformation, and improving business-IT collaboration also leads to better apps with higher user adoption and better business outcomes.
Mendix has enterprise customers in all manufacturing sectors, from Automotive and Industrial Machinery to Aerospace and Defense, and from Electronics and Consumer Products to Life Sciences and Chemicals. In fact, shortly after Siemens acquired Mendix, they also started using it themselves. Four years later, they now have 600+ apps in production - all running on AWS - with 300+ more on the way. APPLICATION TEMPLATES Mendix offers a range of pre-built app templates to show customers what's possible and help them jumpstart certain use cases, which they can then adapt to their own specific needs. We have app templates in the areas of shop floor (https://bit.ly/44D5A0Q ), quality management (https://bit.ly/3HQg6Ib ) and supply chain management (https://bit.ly/3nFAG7n ), including procurement, logistics, warehousing and production planning (https://bit.ly/41ax76Z ). A good example of an app template is the Mendix Lean Daily Management (LDM) Suite, which combines Mendix with AWS IoT TwinMaker to help production line supervisors monitor operations with a real-time, 3D visualization of the shopfloor (digital twin).
INTEGRATION CAPABILITIES Mendix is an open and agnostic platform that supports all common industry standards and integrates with any kind of system, from PLM and ERP to MES and IIoT. It's also the low-code platform of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, so it comes with pre-built integrations for Teamcenter, Opcenter, Insights Hub and other Xcelerator products. Thanks to its long-standing partnership with SAP, Mendix also has strong integration capabilities with SAP ECC, S/4HANA and BTP, including the ability to deploy Mendix apps directly to the BTP cloud. MENDIX AND AWS Mendix is fully cloud-native, with containerized apps that can be deployed in a public cloud, private cloud, on premise and even on edge devices, like Siemens Industrial Edge. The cloud deployment options (https://bit.ly/3phq0MI ) include a highly automated and fully managed public cloud, called Mendix Cloud, which has run on AWS since 2016. Customers who prefer to deploy apps in their own AWS account can do that with the Mendix on Amazon EKS Reference Deployment (https://bit.ly/43rncef ). Over 75% of Mendix customers run their apps on Mendix Cloud, their AWS private cloud or a combination of both.
Mendix is also a key part of the Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) (https://bit.ly/3XTJ6FL ) Siemens signed with AWS in 2021. As a result, Mendix now has a dedicated AWS development team, which aims to make Mendix the fastest and easiest way to build apps on AWS. This has resulted in a rich set of Mendix connectors to 20+ AWS services (https://bit.ly/419mRvz ) and an AWS Workshop (https://workshops.aws/card/mendix ), which teaches AWS builders how to use them and get started with Mendix for free. To do this, they will need the Mendix IDE, called Studio Pro. Normally, developers download it on their own machines, but they can also use the Studio Pro AMI (https://go.aws/3Md8TEZ ) to run it on Amazon EC2. Rapid app development has saved time and reduced team size for multiple client projects
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
In my opinion, the best features Mendix offers include scalability, development, reducing the development timeline, and it is very fast. Mendix's scalability works for me because it is drag and drop, so we do not spend time coding; we just drag and drop, which is much faster than traditional development. I find enough useful features in Mendix. Mendix has positively impacted my organization because it is a developing stack and is very much faster, making it easier to attract clients.
What needs improvement?
Improvements for Mendix include that sometimes it gets hung while loading.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Mendix for 3.5 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Mendix is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Mendix's scalability allows us to add a couple of rows or columns; you can add it in the entity, and it will be reflected as a table without needing much architecture changes.
How are customer service and support?
Mendix customer support is very quick, and within a week, I can close a ticket, as they solve it promptly.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Negative
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I did not use a different solution before Mendix.
How was the initial setup?
What about the implementation team?
I cannot provide any unique details about how I use Mendix for my clients, as that cannot be explained or exposed.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment with Mendix, as in default software development, a team with 10 developers or more is needed, while here we can do it with one or two developers, so it is truly a money saver for the company. Since using Mendix, I can say that mostly the development time would be a year, but we can complete it within three months with Mendix, which is very time-saving; in my career, I have completed around 9 to 10 projects.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing Mendix, I evaluated other options including React and Node.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to others looking into using Mendix is to learn the marketplace and come to Studio Pro, and you can develop the application. I give Mendix an overall rating of 9.
Low-code platform has delivered faster patient enrollment and benefit verification workflows
What is our primary use case?
Our organization currently serves multiple pharmaceutical clients, and we design scalable and efficient end-to-end products and services based on web applications using Mendix , a low-code platform tool.
We have created multiple web applications for our pharmaceutical clients, including applications that help patients submit enrollment forms to enter their information and prescription details for ordering glucose monitoring devices or checking their insurance eligibility. We have also built different portals for tender solutions and systems for checking benefits verifications via web applications, including a channel management system and a revenue management system, among others.
What is most valuable?
Mendix is quite comfortable for the team to use, particularly for developers who have worked with low-code platform tools in their past experiences, as it enables integration with many components, including external and internal APIs, PDF generation, Twilio component, and AWS integration. This is one of the key selling points for Mendix, and if developers are seasoned in CSS and UI, they can create a lucrative and user-friendly interface.
The best features Mendix offers in my experience include its readiness to go to market, which reduces the effort and time consumed in developing an application end-to-end. If you have hands-on developers, you can easily have your application ready for business and end users within weeks or months, instead of the typical five to six months that other applications usually take.
What needs improvement?
In every area of technology, there is always room for improvement, and Mendix is no exception. I would highlight some areas for potential improvement, such as the ability to integrate more easily with external databases, which takes a considerable amount of time in Mendix compared to my past experiences. Integration with external databases can be slow, and it burdens queries when trying to pull large datasets, thus slowing down page execution.
Additionally, there are issues with constant values during deployments, where Mendix overwrites values without prior notification, which could result in unwanted changes if post-deployment activities are not monitored. The user interface documentation is clear and easy to understand if developers are skilled enough to handle CSS and configuration, but there are definitely a few enhancements that could be made, such as directly importing CSS files or improving the integration of tools like Cognito forms. The areas I have mentioned regarding external database integration, constant values during deployment, and some aspects of CSS and UI, as well as internal coding, cover my main concerns regarding where Mendix could be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have eight plus years of experience, and I am currently associated with more than six years at Eversana.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before Mendix, we were using another low-code platform tool, and our organization decided to shift to Mendix. During this transition, our capable developers were able to adapt to Mendix easily, and we successfully delivered all of our projects within the defined timeframe, which made clients and stakeholders happy with the timeline and efficiency we achieved during this shift.
What other advice do I have?
For any organization looking to adopt Mendix, I would advise ensuring that their developers are skilled with low-code platform tools, as Mendix is a great platform that allows for the easy creation of high-quality, scalable, reliable, and durable web and mobile applications. It is essential to face challenges in adopting new technologies and conduct out-of-the-box research and development. Mendix is one of the platforms that the industry currently looks to for improvement and efficiency for end users and clients in the future. I would rate this product an eight overall.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Rapid development has transformed how we build internal subscription and integration apps while maintaining transparent pricing and strong support
What is our primary use case?
A specific example of an application I've built with Mendix is Subscription Tracker, where the user can get a subscription for a particular charger or manage their subscription.
What is most valuable?
My experience with scalability and complex integrations includes a lot of integration with AWS systems and SAP systems, and I have integrated Mendix with Azure for SSO and the Auth0 system, making these integrations much easier than traditional programming languages. When it comes to scalability, we initially thought our application would require a small environment, but as users started using it, we understood it required more RAM and processing power, and we can scale the environment up or down with just a single click.
One feature I like most in Mendix is the reusable component, as it has its own marketplace where people like us publish widgets that can be used directly inside Mendix just by dragging and dropping it down.
