You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this software on. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance size, so pricing scales with the compute you choose. Smaller general-purpose types like t2 and t3 sit at one end. Compute-optimized (c-family), memory-optimized (r- and x-family), storage-optimized (i- and d-family), and accelerated types (g, p, inf, trn) cover heavier workloads. Larger sizes in each family cost more per hour. You select one instance type; there are no separate tiers or add-ons. Billing runs only while an instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get on the instance for the hourly software charge?
You get a machine image with all stable OpenJDK versions pre-installed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. OpenJDK 8 is the default. Versions 9 and above sit under /opt/java. You point JAVA_HOME to the path you need. The hourly rate covers the software running on your chosen instance type.
Am I charged when the EC2 instance is stopped?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. A stopped instance accrues no software charge. Underlying AWS storage fees for the volume may still apply while stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again. You pay only for the hours the instance actually runs.
How does cost change if I move to a larger instance type?
You select one instance type at a time. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS size, and larger sizes within a family carry a higher hourly rate. Changing type means launching on the new size; the rate for that type applies while it runs. There are no add-ons or seat counts.
