Forest Cover Classification Map Data Product Overview
Land use and land cover (LULC) maps from Descartes Labs provide organizations with valuable information about the interaction of supply chain operations and the natural environment.
Thousands of expert-labeled, 10-meter resolution Sentinel-2 and Landsat training images were mapped over distinct timeframes to build a regional forest classification layer for 2017 over Sumatra, Indonesia. These maps identify forest areas that have remained undisturbed from 1990 to 2017, generally equating to primary forest.
Classifications derived from Sentinel-2 imagery achieved approximately 97% accuracy against withheld validation data.
The final data product can be used with a high degree of confidence to identify forests for conservation or to assess the impact of supply chain operations on particular land cover categories.
Use Cases
- Corporations can identify areas of deforestation risk and assess where to limit supply chain operations
- Governments can pinpoint and protect high-value forest areas for conservation
- NGOs and consultants can target high-risk regions for future monitoring
