    Catena Tools

     Info
Catena is a source-available backend toolkit built by game developers, for game developers. It cuts months of infrastructure work down to days, with a native Unreal Engine SDK for seamless integration.

    Overview

Catena Tools is a modular, source-available backend toolkit developed by Wolfjaw Studios - a game backend co-development studio with credits across titles like NBA 2K, Destiny 2, League of Legends, Among Us, Apex Legends, and Marathon. The backend space has long lagged behind client-side tooling. While engines like Unreal have dramatically lowered the barrier to building games, the infrastructure required to run them online - authentication, matchmaking, party systems, server orchestration, inventory, economy - still demands months of custom engineering. Existing SaaS and BaaS platforms promise shortcuts but routinely underdeliver: poor observability, limited flexibility, weak documentation, and support that only becomes useful near production. Catena solves this by providing a working, opinionated baseline that developers actually own. Built in .NET for broad developer familiarity, it ships with an out-of-the-box plugin system to allow implementation of the services every online game needs, while remaining modular and extensible enough to meet the unique needs of any title. The module-first architecture of Catena enables developers to utilize the vast array of AWS services to power their game backend. Out of the box, Catena deployed on AWS infrastructure makes use of AWS EC2, AWS S3, AWS EBS, AWS Elastic IP, AWS Route53, and AWS VPCs. Catena can be further customized by using additional AWS services such as GameLift and FlexMatch for dedicated server orchestration and matchmaking features in a native AWS environment.

As Catena is source-available, additional ongoing support from the Wolfjaw team is available on a customer-by-customer contract basis.

    Highlights

    • Source-available architecture: Unlike SaaS/BaaS platforms, Catena provides its full source code to developers, giving teams the ability to inspect, modify, and extend every system to fit their game's specific needs. This mirrors the philosophy of Unreal Engine itself.
    • Modular and interoperable by design: Catena is not an all-or-nothing platform. Teams can adopt individual services: matchmaking, leaderboards, and inventory, alongside existing third-party tools, using Catena's auth middleware to bridge them. No rip-and-replace required.
    • Plug-ins for existing off-the-shelf solutions: Catena comes equipped with plugins to the best and most popular off-the-shelf solutions allowing developers to pick and choose the best tools for their game. (Discord Social SDK, Vivox, Epic Account Services, Flexmatch, OpenMatch, AWS Gamelift, Edgegap, etc.) Catena provides an API that allows developers to bring custom solutions where needed.
