Overview
This AMI runs Appsmith Community Edition, the open-source low-code platform for building internal tools such as admin panels and dashboards on top of your databases and APIs, on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The container image is pinned to appsmith/appsmith-ce v2.6.0 and baked into the AMI, so first start does not depend on a registry. Appsmith is an independent project and Perimattic is not affiliated with it.
Why Appsmith?
Appsmith lets you build applications by dragging widgets onto a page and connecting them to your databases and APIs, with JavaScript where you need logic.
What Perimattic adds
Pinned, tested version: the image is fixed to v2.6.0, not 'latest', so a rebuild never changes the application behind your back.
Administrator created for you: on a new Appsmith the first account to sign up becomes the instance administrator. During first-login setup that account is created for you through Appsmith's own sign-up API with a random 24-character password generated on your server, and public sign-up is then switched off (Admin settings > Authentication), before the site is published. There are no default or shared credentials in the image. Anonymous usage reporting to Appsmith is switched off.
HTTPS: Apache is configured as a reverse proxy and a free Let's Encrypt certificate is requested for your domain with certbot. Appsmith listens only on the loopback interface.
Patched base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS built through an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline, with security updates applied at build time.
Sizing
Appsmith's single container bundles its own database, cache and web services. Measured idle with no apps built: the container uses about 1 to 1.3 GB and the whole server about 1.3 to 1.5 GB. It starts on a t3.small (2 GB) but leaves only about 0.5 GB free, so use a t3.medium (4 GB) or larger.
Edition and licence
This AMI contains Appsmith Community Edition, released under the Apache License 2.0. Appsmith also offers paid Business and Enterprise editions as a separate image; they are not included. A new instance has no email server configured, so invitations and password resets by email need one to be set up under Admin settings.
Getting Started Launch the AMI on a t3.medium or larger and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Sign in at https://your-domain with the email you entered and the password printed at the end of setup
A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS. The first start takes a few minutes.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release.
- Application: Appsmith v2.6.0 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
- Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
- TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
- Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
- The application's admin account is created during first-login setup, before the site is published.
- Edition: Appsmith Community Edition (Apache-2.0). Public sign-up is switched off after the administrator is created; anonymous usage reporting is off.
- Needs 4 GB of memory (t3.medium or larger).
Additional details
Usage instructions
-
Launch an Instance
From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.
-
Choose the Recommended Instance Type
Appsmith uses about 1.3 to 1.5 GB of memory on the server when idle. It starts on a t3.small (2 GB) but leaves about 0.5 GB free; use t3.medium (4 GB) or larger.
-
Configure Security Group
Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:
- 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
- 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
- 443 (HTTPS) - access to Appsmith
-
Point a domain at the instance
Create a DNS A record (for example apps.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.
-
Connect to the Instance
ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
-
First-Login Setup
The first SSH login runs a guided setup:
- Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
- Generates a random 24-character password for the administrator
- Starts Appsmith (the first start takes a few minutes), creates the instance administrator through Appsmith's sign-up API and switches public sign-up off
- Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
- Prints the URL, email and password; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)
If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.
-
Access Appsmith
Open https://<your-domain> and use the credentials printed at the end of setup.
-
Credentials
Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:
sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt
-
Manage the Services
cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart
Invite users from inside Appsmith; invitations and password resets by email need an email server (Admin settings > Email). Appsmith's data is kept in /opt/app/stacks; back it up or snapshot the volume before upgrades.
