You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. There is no long-term commitment, and you can stop usage at any time. The eleven options map to different instance sizes and families, so your hourly rate scales with the compute, memory, or GPU capacity you pick. Smaller instances like t3.small and t3.medium suit lighter workloads, while larger options such as c5.2xlarge, c6i.2xlarge, and the GPU-backed g4dn.xlarge handle heavier demands. Standard AWS infrastructure charges apply on top of the software rate for each instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get with each hourly instance option like t3.small or g4dn.xlarge?
Each option maps to one EC2 instance size running the preconfigured SQL Express Server 17 image on Windows Server 2022. The instance name tells you the compute, memory, and GPU capacity you receive. For example, g4dn.xlarge adds GPU capacity, while t3.small offers lighter compute for smaller workloads.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running time only, billed hourly with no long-term commitment. When you stop an instance, software charges stop too. You can cancel at any time. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees, which are separate from the software rate.
How does my bill change if I switch to a different instance type?
Your hourly software rate follows the instance you run. Larger families like c5.2xlarge or c6i.2xlarge carry different rates than smaller ones like t3.medium. To change, you launch a different instance type; the new hourly rate applies from that point. Standard AWS infrastructure charges also apply on top.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
