You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this Maven build environment on. All 21 dimensions bill the same software on Ubuntu with maintenance support; they differ only by the underlying compute size. Options span burstable T2 and T3 instances (nano through 2xlarge), general-purpose M-series (M3, M4, M5), compute-optimized C-series (C3, C4, C5), and memory-optimized R-series (R3, R4, R5). Larger instances carry higher hourly rates. Choose the instance that fits your build workload, and your cost scales with the hours you keep it running.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for one hour of an instance like m5.large or c5.large?
Each hourly rate covers one running EC2 instance of that size, preloaded with Apache Maven on Ubuntu and vendor maintenance support. You get the OpenJDK build environment, configured Maven directory structure, and secure SSH access. The instance size determines the CPU and memory available for your builds.
Am I charged when I stop or pause the instance?
The software charge meters running hours only. When you stop an instance, the hourly software rate stops accruing. Note that AWS may still charge for attached storage volumes while the instance is stopped, but the Maven software licence bills active running time only.
How do I move to a bigger instance if my builds outgrow the current size?
Pricing scales by instance size, not by an automatic tier upgrade. To use more compute, you launch a new instance from a size with a higher hourly rate, such as moving from a T-series to an M-series or C-series option. The software runs the same across all sizes.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
