Data Center Operations Automation with /IOTCONNECT

Data Center Operations Automation (DCOA) from Avnet and AWS addresses these challenges with sensor-driven intelligence across thermal, power, environmental, and asset systems, built on /IOTCONNECT and AWS. Telemetry from CRAC units, chillers, UPS systems, PDUs, and environmental probes streams through AWS IoT Core and Greengrass into real-time dashboards, predictive alerts, and automated control loops. Edge AI classifies vibration and acoustic signatures on-device to project failures 30–90 days ahead, GenAI-assisted runbooks powered by Amazon Bedrock guide technicians to root cause, and 2D/3D digital twins anchor every alert to its physical location. The platform scales from a single 10,000 sq ft site to large multi-site portfolios.

    Overview

Data Center Operations Automation (DCOA) from Avnet, built on /IOTCONNECT and AWS, turns manual, reactive data center facility management into a continuously monitored, automated operation. Today's data centers are scaling faster than the teams that run them. Technicians still walk the floor with clipboards and thermal cameras, log readings by hand, and discover problems only after a rack has already overheated, a PDU has tripped, or a leak has reached the floor. DCOA replaces those manual rounds with always-on sensing, edge intelligence, and cloud analytics so operators can see conditions in real time, detect anomalies before they escalate, and prove compliance without extra headcount.

The solution combines Avnet-integrated sensor hardware, gateway connectivity, the /IOTCONNECT IoT platform, and AWS cloud services into a single deployable stack. Environmental and electrical sensors - temperature, humidity, differential pressure, water and leak detection, airflow, vibration, door and access state, smoke, and power quality - are placed at rack, row, and room level. Data is aggregated at a certified edge gateway that performs local filtering, buffering, and rules evaluation, so critical alarms fire in milliseconds even if the network link is degraded. Telemetry is then streamed securely to AWS IoT Core, where it is normalized, stored, and made available to analytics, dashboards, and downstream enterprise systems.

    Key capabilities:

Real-time environmental and power monitoring. Continuous visibility into thermal gradients, hot spots, airflow containment, humidity, and power draw across every rack and zone, with configurable thresholds and escalation paths.

Predictive maintenance and anomaly detection. Machine learning models running on AWS analyze historical and streaming data to surface degrading fans, failing power supplies, cooling inefficiencies, and abnormal load patterns before they cause an outage.

Automated alerting and workflow integration. Rule-based and ML-driven alerts route to email, SMS, mobile push, or directly into ITSM, BMS, DCIM, and CMMS systems, creating tickets and dispatching technicians automatically.

Digital twin and visualization. Floor-plan and rack-level dashboards render live conditions, historical trends, and heat maps, giving operations and facilities teams a shared view of site health.

Energy and sustainability reporting. Track PUE, cooling efficiency, and consumption trends by zone to identify optimization opportunities, reduce energy spend, and support ESG and regulatory reporting requirements.

Secure device lifecycle management. Zero-touch provisioning, certificate-based authentication, encrypted transport, role-based access control, and over-the-air firmware updates keep fleets secure and current across their operational life.

Business outcomes. Customers use DCOA to reduce unplanned downtime and the revenue loss that comes with it, eliminate hours of manual inspection labor per shift, extend equipment life through condition-based maintenance, lower cooling and energy costs by operating closer to optimal setpoints, and improve audit readiness with automatic, time-stamped records of environmental conditions. Because the platform is sensor- and vendor-agnostic, it works across colocation facilities, enterprise data centers, edge and micro data centers, and telecom sites - including mixed-vendor, brownfield environments where rip-and-replace is not an option.

Built on AWS. DCOA uses AWS IoT Core for secure device connectivity, AWS IoT Greengrass for edge processing, Amazon S3 and time-series storage for durable telemetry retention, AWS Lambda for event-driven automation, Amazon SageMaker for predictive models, and Amazon QuickSight and API-based integrations for reporting. The architecture scales from a single room to a global portfolio of sites without redesign, and inherits the security, availability, and compliance posture of the AWS Cloud.

Why Avnet. Avnet delivers the complete solution - not just software. As a global technology distributor and solutions provider, Avnet handles sensor and gateway selection, hardware sourcing and supply chain, device certification, system integration, deployment services, and ongoing support. The /IOTCONNECT platform provides the pre-built device templates, rules engine, dashboards, and management tooling that compress a typical multi-month IoT build into a rapid, repeatable deployment. Proof-of-concept engagements can be stood up in weeks, with a clear path from pilot to site-wide and portfolio-wide rollout.
