Smaller instances like t2.nano, t3.micro, and t2.small suit light use. Mid-range m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5dn, m5ad, m4, and m3 families cover growing workloads. What do I actually get for the hourly rate on each instance type?
You get the VPN Server software running on one Amazon EC2 instance of the size you pick. The instance type sets the CPU and memory available, which affects how many concurrent VPN users and how much traffic it handles. You choose the size to match your capacity needs.
Am I charged when the VPN Server instance is stopped or powered off?
The software rate meters running instance-hours only. A fully stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS resources, such as attached storage, may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped, but those are billed by AWS, not by the software.
Do I need to open any network ports to use the VPN Server?
Yes. To connect and manage the server, you open TCP port 22 for SSH access and UDP port 1194 for the VPN connection in your Amazon firewall network properties. You create users on the server, then connect using an OpenVPN client with the generated config file.
