Who this is for:
Platform engineers and integrators who need a repeatable EC2 foundation with the STIG filesystem layout already in place - before applying your own profiles or subscribing to a scored StigReady Applied image.
What you get (StigReady Base tier):
Separate mounts for /home, /tmp, /var, /var/log, /var/log/audit, /var/tmp (applied at install; not retrofittable after launch)
EC2 cloud baseline: IMDSv2 required, no pre-installed SSH authorized_keys, PermitRootLogin and password SSH disabled, host keys regenerated on first boot
Built from official OS install media; patched at build time

Pricing: one flat software fee of $0.02/hr (or $149 per instance per year on an annual plan), the same on every supported instance type; it does not change with instance size. EC2 infrastructure is billed separately by AWS.

STIG disk layout at install - cannot be retrofitted after launch
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay an hourly software fee tied to the EC2 instance type you run. The 17 options map directly to instance sizes across several families: general-purpose t3 and m5/m6i, compute-focused c5, and memory-focused r5. Within each family, pricing scales with instance size, from large up through 2xlarge or 4xlarge. You pick the instance that fits your workload, and the software fee bills per hour of use. This fee sits on top of your normal EC2 charges, which AWS bills separately. RHEL images are bring-your-own-license, so you supply your own Red Hat subscription.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly software fee cover beyond the EC2 instance itself?
The fee covers the hardened base image. You get a STIG partition layout, SSH hardening, and a minimal, patched build from the official OS ISO. You bring your own security profiles, Ansible, and tooling. RHEL images require your own Red Hat subscription, which this fee does not include.
Am I charged the software fee when the instance is stopped?
The software fee bills per hour the instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. AWS may still bill underlying storage charges separately while the instance is stopped. The software meter tracks running time only.
Why are there separate prices for t3, m5, m6i, c5, and r5 instances?
Each option ties to a specific EC2 instance type and size. The t3 and m5/m6i families are general-purpose, c5 is compute-focused, and r5 is memory-focused. Within a family, the fee scales with instance size. You pick the one that matches your workload.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
